Sardinia ranks amongst those places to which there is more than meets the eye. It is with time that its many attractions and beauties are revealed. This is a land to which one must swear allegiance in order to gain its trust. Porto Cervo and its coast must be ‘deserved’ through a profound acquaintance. Its profoundly agricultural roots have imbued it with a wild spirit and authentic character. Its granite landscape can at times appear hostile, as if to protect such a rich natural environment and a beauty so truly rare that it needs to keep at arms length anyone who might not grasp its true nature.
Amongst the stories dotted across the 50-year history of the Costa Smeralda, snapshots, a whole host of anecdotes and shared secrets bear witness to the love, friendship and trust that have been patiently woven into Sardinian time over the years. Personalities whose touching tales invite travel.
Scenes from everyday life, family narratives, memories of characters close to the Gruosi family take us on a journey to the other side of the Porto Cervo mirror.
Opposite me is a woman whose charm and strength combine with a generous spirit and a vivacious, fun approach to life: Barbara Winkworth. In the course of a fascinating conversation, she opens her heart and memory to us. She leafs through the pages of the book of her life, her loves, her accomplishments and her Porto Cervo. A land of freedom where the coves and neighbouring islands afforded a wealth of secret places accessible by boat and where one had the luxury of remaining alone in the world. Locations conducive to a carefree existence. While some of these places have of course since disappeared and become protected or private areas, the sense of freedom remains. A feeling that becomes stronger in the off-season, when these spots regain the tranquillity and peace of former times. The senses also recall each past moment, imprinted on the heart and the subconscious, only to reappear as large as life when the fragrance of myrtle or rosemary blends with the sea air. Breathing in these scents is a breath of freedom and can almost make one forget the passing of time when confronted with such a precise, complete and intense memory. A memory savoured for a precious moment by simply closing one’s eyes and listening to her telling us about her Porto Cervo.

Amongst these memories is one that perfectly embodies the rebellious, adventurous spirit of Fawaz Gruosi, the spirit that has led him to dare and to surpass his limits in his continuous quest to create beauty. In the background are the shores of an island off the north-west tip of Sardinia. Its steep, mountainous landscape is home to a national park whose marine areas are now protected. Nearly 40 years ago, entrance to this place was forbidden. Separated from Sintino by the little island of Piana, Asinara presides over a gulf by the same name. This is a veritable paradise inhabited by dolphins and revealing a unique display of colours and nuances. Asinara was a favourite get-away for the two young people in love. One day, the yellow HydroJet that was their faithful ally in this forbidden escapade abandoned them to their fate. Nonetheless, the sense of freedom experienced on each of their trips precluded any sense of doubt or concern. After a few hours, they launched the distress signals they had on board but nobody came to help them. Just as the day was ending, at the gates of this earthly paradise, the boat made up its mind to resume its course and take our two lovers home again. A memory that remains a symbol of total freedom, insouciance and lightness. A memory that is a dose of oxygen, an anchor point that is good to recall when one might be tempted to forget what the feeling of freedom truly means.
